Whether it’s tucked away on a quiet high street or waiting to be transformed from a rundown boathouse into the heart of a community, bookshops have a habit of capturing our imaginations. In this blog, I’m sharing some of my favourite bookshop romance novels, why this cosy corner of the romance genre is so irresistible, and the story behind Sophie’s dream of opening her own bookshop in The Cherry Blossom Boathouse.

If you've ever wandered around an independent bookshop and thought, I could run one of these, you're in good company.

There's something about bookshops that makes us dream a little bigger. They're places to buy books, of course. But they can also be the heart of a community. Perhaps that's why bookshop romance novels have become such a beloved corner of the romance genre.

In The Cherry Blossom Boathouse, the main character Sophie's dream of opening a bookshop doesn't begin with a perfectly researched business plan. In fact, there really isn’t much of a plan at all. It's more a response to one of those weeks when life seems determined to kick you in the teeth while you're already down. In the space a handful of days, Sophie finds herself without a boyfriend and a job. So, fuelled by a little too much wine, she begins scrolling through Instagram and is stopped by a photograph of a weathered American boathouse surrounded by cherry blossom with the caption: 'Bookstagram Dreams What I wouldn’t give to own a lakeside bookshop like this!' Thing is, it's based in Solace Springs, Washington, USA... and Sophie lives in the UK. Plus she isn't made of money.

One search leads to another and before the wine had worn off, she's launched a crowdfunding campaign with the following listing...

Since being organised is apparently a character flaw these days, I might as well lean all the way in. Help fund the world’s most predictable person to open the world’s most boring bookshop. I promise to alphabetise everything and create a colour-coded system that would make librarians weep with joy. Who’s with me?

It's ridiculous, wonderfully impulsive and exactly the sort of idea that should never have worked. But somehow, it does... and that's why we find Sophie in Solace Springs, ready to open her bookshop and yeah, meet the love of her life!

The Cherry Blossom Boathouse – Laura Bloom

I couldn't write a blog about bookshop romance novels without mentioning Sophie's story. After her crowdfunding campaign unexpectedly goes viral, she buys a rundown boathouse in the fictional lakeside town of Solace Springs, Washington, determined to turn it into the community bookshop she's always dreamed of. Of course, there's romance too, but watching Sophie build something that truly belongs to the community became just as important to me. Neighbours stop by for recommendations, friendships begin between the shelves and the little bookshop becomes the beating heart of Solace Springs.

One of my favourite things about writing a series is that the story doesn't stop when the first book ends. When readers return to Solace Springs in The Sugar Maple Inn, Sophie's dream is no longer a dream at all. As Grace, the single mom protagonist from this second book in the series notes at a Harvest Festival:

Sophie, who ran the bookshop, had outdone herself. It looked like autumn had exploded: maple leaves strung like garland and pumpkins carved with intricate book quotes graced the ground in front of it... she'd turned that old boathouse into something special, building a real bookshop business that actually served the community instead of just extracting money from it.

For me, that's what bookshop dream romance is really about.
